Towards a Sustainable Future (Radio 6PR)

John Brodie talks Sustainability on Radio 6PR with Jason Jordan

Where will we be in the future? How will we be running communities, designing buildings, houses, schools and offices? There is a shift emerging towards sustainable design driven by both designers and home owners in new spaces and existing spaces through retrofitting.

The key to a sustainable home is making a commitment towards sustainable solutions in all areas of the house. Generally the two biggest costs in a house come from lighting and air conditioning.

We need to see the implementation of a regime whereby traditional mechanical methods of heating and cooling are only used at peak times. Therefore, natural ventilation systems can be used for the most part which will dramatically reduce energy costs, increase comfort and help lessen the load on the environment.

We need to do something about the rising cost of electricity bills and our impact on the environment. We need to return to the basics, looking at how air flows and moves around buildings which goes back to the way buildings are being designed. With climate responsive design we can reduce our need for mechanical heating and cooling.

Sustainable Urban Climate and Comfort Lecture Series at the Chinese University of Hong Kong

John Brodie has just attended the ‘’invite only’’ series of cutting edge lectures over six days on sustainable urban climate and comfort at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Organised by Professor Edward Ng from the Architecture Faculty, this unique series of lectures was presented by the leaders in the fields of urban climatology, urban climate and geography, urban planning, thermal comfort and building design in the tropical and sub-tropical environments.

Leading Professors from all around the world converged in Hong Kong and presented their latest research and thinking in one hour and a quarter lectures. These lectures were based on how the urban climate impacts massively on climate change and how climate change will then impact massively on the urban climate and some of the low and zero energy solutions.

A large amount of discussion was based around what constitutes thermal comfort in an outdoor environment while there was also detailed discussion around the impact of natural ventilation and its importance in providing comfort not only inside buildings but also outside buildings to pedestrians etc. in these hot and humid climates.

Detailed consideration was also given to the role of building design and layouts, and streetscapes as well as the overall urban planning strategies needed to significantly reduce the heat loads and heat islands effects which will result in less energy use.

The head of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Professor Kolli, presented on climate data and how the WMO are committed to improving the collection and dissemination of climatic data to assist all practitioners to better understand and implement climatic information at a much more micro scale than is currently available.

The head of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Building Sustainability Programme provided a fascinating lecture on what the cost of adaption and mitigation to climate change is now and will be in the future and how the UNEP is supporting the required changes to building design for both new and retro fit applications.

This unique and challenging series of lectures certainly created an environment of learning, interaction and challenges as the small group of just over 80 attendees including 23 Professors thoroughly interrogated each other’s lectures and science.

All in all it was a fascinating week.

ESD Consultants to 2 New Warrigal Care Aged Care Facilities

15. 09. 2011

Aged Care is an area where Vim is leading the Way in Sustainability. Recently appointed as ESD consultants  to two new Warrigal Care Aged Care projects Vim Sustainability is thrilled to be able to provide ESD guidance and input at the early design stage of these projects via the Architect, Hodges Shorten and the clients sustainability team.

The potential for maximizing the efficiencies and comfort opportunities in these projects is now possible by having Vim appointed at such an early design phase. Utilising passive heating and cooling options wherever possible and making the built form do as much work as possible is a key component of our initial design science strategy.

Understanding the climate and analysing what it brings to the buildings in these two totally different climatic regions will ensure the clients outcome is both comfortable and resource efficient.

Stay tuned for further developments!

Thermal Comfort Study in Aged Care Facilities – World first

Vim Sustainability has just commenced a thermal comfort study in a range of Aged Care facilities in NSW with the intent of identifying what is comfortable for aged care facility inhabitants.

In regards to designing an efficient and sustainable comfortable building there is paucity of knowledge around what residents actually find comfortable, resulting in an excess  of anecdotal evidence, hearsay  and assumptions being made by clients and design teams that often result in unsuitable and uncomfortable  environments   for the resident and expensive outcomes for the client. Remembering the impact conditioned spaces have on energy consumption and carbon emissions the knowledge that can be utilised by understanding what residents will find comfortable will have major impacts on resource usage and related running costs not to mention a raft of other benefits that will improve the design of buildings and residents comfort.

While only a pilot study this is the first type of study involving thermal comfort in aged care facilities undertaken anywhere in the world.

The methodology is based upon the standard ASHRAE research questionnaire and the outcomes will be analysed using a range of statistical diagnostic processes.

The study will be undertaken across a range of facilities in the same climate zone in both winter and summer.

Vim Sustainability is very excited about the outcomes and the insights this will provide to us as sustainability consultants but also to the Aged Care industry as a whole. The completion date of the study is expected to be around May next year. Please feel free to contact us if you require further information around this unique research project.

Vim Supports Education of Khmu Village Children in Laos

In the Khmu village of Lak Pet about 20 kilometres outside of Luang Prabang education of village children is not always accessible due to poverty and the necessity of utilising children in farming and other work.

The Khmu people of Laos do not have a traditional written language and in isolated villages many Khmu, particularly the older villagers, converse in Khmu and cannot speak Lao. Very few  Khmu schoolchildren in Laos learn English. Therefore, many Khmu children remain largely uneducated and unable to obtain anything other than unskilled jobs.

Whilst staying in Luang Prabang, Laos in 2009 Vim Sustainability’s John Brodie asked his tour guide how many children in his village (Lak Pet) finished high school. The answer was, ‘Very few.’

Many families struggled to eke out an existence from agriculture and many children worked with them out of necessity. Also, the cost of sending their children to school was prohibitive – $100 US per year per child. Female children often stayed at home to tend to their many younger siblings and assist with domestic duties. The village schools themselves were woefully under resourced and secondary schools did not offer English as part of the curriculum

John offered to sponsor several of the village children to attend the village school if in primary school and to board at the secondary school in the next village and take English lessons from a local teacher. Phon undertook to administrate the allocation of funds to the selected children and advise of their needs as they arose.

Since this time Vim has financed the education of four village children in Lak Pet as part of its sustainability policy. Vim has also helped to resource the local primary school with text books, stationery, sports equipment and bicycles. Helping families financially is of limited benefit, but the education of children will lead to sustainable improvement in the ability of these children to help both themselves and their communities.

Vim continues to work with Phon and the village elders in Lak Pet in sponsoring the education of more local children and to assist in improving the classrooms and resources of the Lak Pet primary school.

In November 2009 Alix Rochaix, John Brodie’s wife, travelled to Luang Prabang to help allocate funds to buying clothing, equipment, uniforms and bicycles to ride to weekly English lessons for the children: Kun (7), Sang Chen (10), Ping (15) and Hak (15). While there she was privileged to partake in a Khmu Bhasi ritual that blessed her, the children and the school.
