Vim ESD’s  solutions are different because we understand the value of making your development fit the local climate. That is a crucial first step in sustainable design. That’s the first key to reducing building energy use.  We use our outputs from our climate diagnostics and comfort requirements identified in the in the master planning stage combined with our sustainable design science skills to inform the design strategy moving forward.

What is comfort? Are you comfortable?

Creating a live, dynamic internal environment is key point of difference to us. No ‘bank vault’ type 22.5 Degrees and 300 lux accommodation standards  in the facilities we work on. In all buildings no matter how they are heated or cooled at least 15% of the occupants will always be uncomfortable. (ASHRAE 55- 2010) At Vim ESD  we have an in depth understanding of comfort and how it works. We utilise world class standards and research around a range of comfort parameters to help guide us in our design solutions. Deciding what comfort levels you want inside your building is one of the key components that define the correct ESD strategy. Remember we must use the correct sustainable (ESD) strategy for your particular building.

The adaptive comfort standard (ASHRAE 55- 2010) provides a relevant strategy for making people comfortable in naturally ventilated buildings across a range of changeable parameters.

  • Passive ESD  specifications and design

Once we understand the local climate and what it brings to your building design as well as the required comfort performance criteria we can identify the most suitable sustainable design strategy for the architects and engineers to design to.

This strategy then informs our next range of solutions which are based around passive design initiatives as the first point of discussion. This is where we make the built form do the work. This is one of our key sustainable design science principles. Once we have maximised the passive opportunities of your building design we then move to the low tech options. This way your resource usage is minimised and running costs are significantly reduced. Using and implementing that knowledge into the design process is integral to what we do.

Maximised building fabric and façade design are key components of a sustainable resource efficient building. We design and engineer suitable thermal façade options using engineering skills, design science and the world’s best modelling software. We are very, very good at it too!

  • Glazing design

Glazing design isn’t just about the thermal properties of windows. Yes we do that in detail. It is also about identifying the optimum location and shape of the window in the facade in order to promote or maximise daylight or heat or cool the interior. Glazing design is also about air flows and air speeds in and out. Views as well are a major outcome of fenestration layouts and configuration. We also understand the impacts on radiant heat flows and convection cooling/heating currents created by the glazing used in your building.

Our engineers are cognisant of the detailed relationship between glass and comfort and health and energy. Using the latest software modelling and design skills we can identify the most suitable glazing specification for your facility whether single or ventilated facades, shaded or unshaded.

More and more designers are adopting ventilated facades as a sustainable design option. Understanding the engineering around air flows, heat transfers, volumes, visible transmission of the glazing, thermal properties, control systems, operational management…. there are many variables and possibilities. You don’t just find these things out in a book. Having worked on a range of ventilated facade designs here and overseas our team will show you how to master this increasingly popular design concept.

Shading of your windows and your building is a vital component of keeping your building cool in summer and warm in winter. Shading isn’t just about overhangs either.

We use our detailed sustainable design science skills and specific software to identify the best shading options for your facility. We can integrate it or make it a feature but best of all we make it actually work! How’s that for a refreshing change?

In addition we use the shading to improve natural ventilation by the shape and configuration of that shading or to increase daylight penetration.
